One of the most expensive painting repairs that as a home owner you could possibly have to under go is to have lead paint removed from your home. This is not a job for the faint of heart. Nor is a job for a home owner without a lot of time and patience. But if your one of the rare home owners that's ready to tackle this monumental task then you will need to be equipped with the proper information to complete the job.
What about scraping that paint off? That won't put to much lead dust in the air right? The answer to that question is wrong if you dry scrape it. You can wet it down with water and scrape it with very little dust. This way will get the job done. The problem with this method is that you will not get a perfectly smooth painted surface because you won't be able to remove it all. After scraping the paint you need to use the thickest primer and paint you can find. This will make your paint primer combination be 8 mill meters in thickness. Paint is normally 2 mill meters thick and this will give you 4 times the thickness. This will allow you to cover a lot of the defects in the lead paint that didn't get removed.
That brings us to the best method to remove the paint and that's by a heater and not just any heat this one is called the Silent Paint remover. Some heaters are hotter then the recommended 900 degrees recommended but this operates in a safer range and removes paint very quickly. This will remove all the paint and leave a bare wood surface. Now if you want to buy this heater it cost $600 but you can rent them for $25 over the Internet. Just do a google search and you will find out everything about this great product.
I'm not here to promote the silent heater, I'm a professional house painter and I am just sharing my experience with you.
